Mission:
Flashpoint
Location: U.S.S. Enterprise
Timeline: 3190-11-05, 10:00
Wilkan sat motionless on the elevated central dais, his broad hands resting flat against the sleek control interfaces integrated directly into the armrests of the sole command chair. Around him, the dark, high-contrast bulkheads of the Bridge and the cold, utilitarian glow of the perimeter consoles framed the steady, rhythmic pulse of Deck 01. The environment was intentionally dark and industrial, bathed in soft shades of teal, violet, and blue that glinted off the polished deckplates.
He did not speak. He issued no directives, nor did he sweep his hands to pull up floating holographic overlays across the central well. For well over an hour, Wilkan had simply remained the absolute center of the nerve center; a silent, unyielding fixture staring thoughtfully at the dark floor plates beneath his boots.
From his commanding vantage point on the dais, his ancient, watchful eyes quietly tracked the steady choreography of the Bridge. He observed the silent shifts in posture at the Flight and Tactical consoles on the raised platform ahead, the rapid, practiced fingers tapping across the lower perimeter arrays, and the subtle, cautious glances occasionally cast back toward the Center Seat by the department heads working their stations. Unlike the expansive Bridges of larger exploration vessels, the classic design of this ship left him entirely isolated on his elevated platform, exposed from every angle to his officers, yet his absolute, deliberate silence created an impenetrable distance. There was no flanking chair for a First Officer beside him, a deliberate echo of classic Starfleet doctrine where Number One served in a dual capacity managing a primary department while anchoring the command chain.
Internally, Wilkan weighed every piece of the tactical board currently arrayed against him. He thought of the lingering, bitter blood of the Bassen Rift still threatening to derail the joint integration between Captain sh'Cholar's Andorian Guard vessel and Captain Paafith's Ni'Varian heavy cruiser. He reflected on Admiral Vance’s cold, calculated decision to deploy the Enterprise not as a polished flagship, but as a battle-tested relic meant to project raw discipline and rugged endurance to fragile new allies. His gaze occasionally drifted past the raised forward consoles toward the main viewscreen, where the surging violet fringe of an un-forecasted class-four ion storm crept ominously along the perimeter of Sector 004. Hovering over all of it was the unyielding forty-eight-hour clock ticking down on selecting one of his department heads to step up and shoulder the dual responsibility of First Officer.
He remained completely still, letting his quiet, heavy presence settle over the Bridge like a rising tide, allowing his crew to slowly absorb the introspective nature of the man who now held their center chair.
Elara looked from her station to Wilkan. He was silent as he mostly was, but he seemed... well, not just still. He was clearly working through their situation in his mind. He had never been much of a talker. But she would have wanted external ideas. However, Wilkan was what she could only describe as a relic of the past. His quiet wasn't only something he did. It was a part of who he was. She had gotten used to the quiet radiating from him. But she also knew that some people would find it unsettling that he didn't say much. Most beings used words. She had gotten used to him, but most people didn't understand. His quiet was his armor, his shield. She had never discovered why he had all those barriers around him. And, despite her curiosity, wouldn't ask. Even IF she sensed anything of interest, she wouldn't bring it up. His past and secrets were his to tell if he found it needed.
Even when he took her under his wing, he had never said much. But what she DID sense back then, was a sort of pride that words would never be able to make it out loud. No words. Just the hint of emotions she knew he had locked down ages ago. Other than that time she had tinkered with some of his discarded technology. Elara never found out whether he found it useful, annoying or just amusing by her curiosity. She DID know he had left a box of discarded tech by her room the day after she had fixed a sensor in a warehouse near the loading docks. It was the Solaco that was being equipped back then. While an inspector DID catch her, he was so impressed by her fixed sensor that he let her go. Looking back, it made him wonder if that was when Wilkan found her originally. The time with fixing the sensor was around 6 weeks before Wilkan took her under his wing. With a quiet sigh, she turned back to look at her station. There was plenty to do, and not enough time to do so.
Scarlet had made herself comfortable, with one leg up, foot on the chair, her left arm draped across the knee, and her chin resting on that arm. Her other hand was resting on the console, holding Sulaco - no, Enterprise in position. Her only major movement was when she reached over to grab her drink. Of course, despite her outward relaxation, she was still keeping a focussed eye on the ship's movement, as well as anything else going on around it. If needed, she would spring into action within the blink of an eye. But, for now, that didn't seem necessary. So, until an order was given by the Captain, or an alert caught her attention, she would remain relaxed.
She knew the importance of the mission, but she was not worried about that. The only thing that caused her some concern was the ion storm looming in the distance, creeping ever closer to the operational area. For now, they were safe, but she had enough experience to know that these storms were never fully predictable. For someone unfamiliar with the warning signs, even this distance to a Class Four storm could become deadly in mere moments. Commander O'Hare, luckily, was familiar with those warning signs. She had been twelve when she and her mother had encountered one of them, and barely escaped with their ship intact.
Suddenly, Scarlet shifted her position, sitting up straight, her leg moving off the chair as her hands began flying over her console. For a moment, she hesitated to break the silence on the bridge, but ultimately decided that what she had to say was too important to leave unsaid.
"Folks, the storm's trajectory has shifted. The way it's going now, we're not going to be caught by the fringes anymore. We're going to be right in the middle of it." The pilot glanced at the readouts to double check. "At its current rate, we'll start to be affected in about forty to fifty minutes at best."
Without a single wasted motion, Wilkan leaned forward, his hands pressing smoothly against the armrests of his chair. The quiet, introspective stillness vanished, replaced instantly by the cold, presence of a captain taking control. Forty minutes. The ticking clock of Exercise Sentinel had just collided with the immediate reality of an escalating threat and they needed to prepare for what would come next.
"Very well, Commander," Wilkan answered, his deep voice slicing through the low hum of the Bridge with absolute clarity. "Adjust our thrusters and keep us locked on station until we're cleared to break dock."
Scarlet nodded. "I'll carry on what I've been doing, yep."
"Engineering, Daro," Wilkan directed after having opened a channel to Main Engineering. "The storm is accelerating. I need the Impulse manifolds pre-warmed and the Spore Drive brought up to secondary standby immediately. Route extra power to structural integrity too; when that storm hits, I don't want us losing a single megawatt to plasma bleed."
Vaelira looked across the engineering displays as Wilkan’s orders came through, one hand already moving to pull the impulse systems out of their quieter dockside state. “Understood,” she replied, attention splitting naturally between the channel and the readings in front of her. “I’ll have impulse ready before the storm reaches us. Spore drive to secondary standby now.”
She glanced toward one of the engineers working the power board. “Give structural integrity priority over anything we don’t actually need. Keep life support alone, obviously, and don’t steal from shields unless I ask.”
The acknowledgement came from somewhere behind her as Vaelira brought up the spore-drive status. The system had settled since Titan, but she still watched the first rise in power more closely than the computer seemed to think necessary. There was no reason to push it yet. Standby meant ready, not impatient.
“Captain, structural integrity is coming up now,” she added over the open channel. “I’ll keep enough in reserve that we’re not fighting the storm and ourselves at the same time.”
Her eyes moved briefly to the environmental telemetry beginning to creep into Engineering from outside the dock. Forty minutes was plenty of warning.
Provided the storm agreed.
Vaelira closed the channel and leaned slightly closer to the display. “Alright,” she murmured, more to the machinery than anyone nearby. “Let’s not make our first day as Enterprise embarrassing.”
"Jyn, I want a continuous micro-sweep on those ion density vectors," Wilkan ordered as he closed the channel with a flick of his thumb, his ancient eyes fixing on Jyn. "Cross-reference the storm's core displacement with our exercise grid in Sector 004. Find me every stable pocket and dead zone in that violet front before we cross the perimeter. If Vol’Rala and Khazara run into trouble out there, we need to know the safe corridors before their sensors go dark.
"On it", Elara said as she turned to her station. She moved her hands, working as fast as possible. "I see 4 stable pockets, and 7 dead zones. The stable sockets are moving around. The micro-sweep is showing that that we have several red flags, so to say. The pockets moves around in orbit around something. I'm not sure what, yet, but I'm working on it", she said with a frown. "The ion density is between the dead zones and the pockets. Ion density shouldn't be doing this. It's opening 2 pockets of safety", she said. "The ion density is getting worse after the safe pockets were created. "The ion density is increasing at the storm's center. Wait a moment", she muttered to herself. "The ion density is what everything, including the storm, is orbiting around", she said aloud, hoping things would work out.
He pivoted slightly toward the forward platform, his focus sharpening on Ops. "Grimes, streamline the data pipelines for joint comms and prepare redundancy protocols for when the subspace noise spikes. If the local relays fry, I want Enterprise acting as the single operational nexus for the entire task force."
"Zim, prep all defensive arrays," Wilkan commanded to Zim at his new workstation on the side of the Bridge. "Set our Phasers to low-yield pulse signatures for the drill, but keep the primary emitters running hot. Load dummy torpedoes, but prepare emergency shield-harmonic overlays. If that storm breaks through our shields while we're playing adversary, I want active counter-harmonics ready to deploy on a second's notice."
He turned his head toward the comms console along the lower ring, locking eyes with T'Krell. "T'Krell, open a secure channel to Admiral Vance's ready room on the station, and patch a secondary burst transmission to Captain sh'Cholar and Captain Paafith. Inform them that the exercise parameters are now live under active storm conditions. Tell them Enterprise is moving to position, and we expect them in the grid... no delays, no excuses."
The Caitan's whiskers twitched into a faint smirk as Wilkan began to show his hand in shaping what was already a highly charged exercise into something dangerous between two still bitter rivals. If rebuilding the Federation to reach the pinnacle of its lost golden era was going to become more than talk this experiment needed to be successful. A raging ion storm was free of prejudice, pride and emotion, and it was crucially unpredictable. They'd need to work as a tight unit to avoid calamity. It would be a testing day: "Certainly," he replied.
Finally, Wilkan tapped a sequence into his armrest to route a direct comm line down to Sickbay, "S'reessa, prepare Sickbay for environmental trauma protocols. Alert your team for atmospheric decompression and radiation surges. We're running point, and if anyone takes a hit out there, it's coming through your doors first."
"On it capt." she shouted to her staff. "Ok I want plenty of tychronidine and we'll need dermal regenerators too. Hemo trian for iron based blood booster and junikan for copper based as more then likely there'll be a vulcan or two among the survivors. and make sure the beds are ready for trauma and be ready for surgery as I'm sure some will likely need it."

"You have your orders," Wilkan said quietly after having closed the line to Sickbay. His watchful gaze swept across the Bridge as he waited for his department heads to report in. "Let's show Fleet Command what this ship can do."
"Combat exercise in an ion storm," Scarlet commented with a chuckle. "That might just make the list of the crazier things I've been involved with." She swiped a hand across the helm control, reconfiguring it to her personalised combat setup. As soon as the programmable matter formed into her HOTAS setup, she took the controls into her hands. "Well then, let's do this."
Wilkan kept his broad hands flat on the armrests, his ancient, watchful eyes tracking the rapid pulse of activity echoing across Deck 01. The dark bulkheads of the Bridge seemed to contract around the central dais as every department locked into alignment. S’reessa was prepping Sickbay for trauma, T’Krell had sent the challenge to Vance, sh'Cholar, and Paafith, and Scarlet was locked into her HOTAS controls, ready to plunge them straight into the storm’s epicenter.
"T'Krell, signal FedHQ," Wilkan commanded softly, his deep voice cutting through the ambient hum with absolute weight. "Request immediate clearance for departure."
"We already have it Captain," the communication officer replied. "The Admiral had pre-empted your request."
He shifted his focus forward, his gaze locking onto the viewscreen as the violet eyewall churned in the distance. "O'Hare, disengage mooring clamps on my mark. Lay in a direct intercept vector for Sector 004, quarter Impulse until we clear the station's perimeter forcefields. We go in fast, we keep our shields hot, and we don't let anyone fall behind."
He leaned back into the center seat, unyielding as the storm waited.
Scarlet nodded. "Ready to get moving whenever," she stated as she took the controls in her hands. "Assisted manual flying engaged, thrusters and impulse engines ready, course plotted," the pilot reported as she looked over the readouts on her console. "Spore drive ready to deploy if needed. I've also taken the liberty of pre-setting an emergency evacuation route in case we need to get out of there in a hurry, either at warp or via jump."
Wilkan's focus remained locked on the viewscreen as the storm surged across the dark canvas of space. The rapid coordination across Deck 01 was smooth, precise, and without hesitation (exactly what he expected from a crew facing down an unpredictable anomaly).
"Release mooring clamps and take us out," Wilkan ordered smoothly, his voice low and steady. "All ahead one quarter Impulse through the station forcefields, then bring us to full standard as soon as we clear the perimeter."
"Anchors aweigh, setting sail," Scarlet confirmed as Enterprise slowly set in motion towards the force field. Once the ship had passed the barrier, she gradually pushed forward on her throttle control until full cruising speed was reached.
"Notify our gamers to fly alongside for now," Targaryen ordered the Communications Officer. "Let's get the game started!" He settled back into the depths of the center chair, broad hands resting flat against the armrests, his unyielding presence anchoring the Bridge as the Enterprise began its smooth outward glide from the station.
